London Theatre Company has announced further casting for The Lady from the Sea, written and directed by Simon Stone after Henrik Ibsen. The production opens at The Bridge Theatre this September.

Joining Alicia Vikander as Ellida and Andrew Lincoln as Edward are Isobel Akuwudike as Hilda, Joe Alwyn as Heath, Brendan Cowell as Finn Marcet, John Macmillan as Lyle, and Gracie Oddie-James as Asa.

The Lady from the Sea begins previews on Wednesday 10 September and officially opens on Thursday 18 September. The run continues for nine weeks until Saturday 8 November 2025.

This reimagining of Ibsen’s play explores a woman’s struggle for autonomy in her relationship. Ellida, married to a well-off doctor, begins to question the predictability of her life. When a former lover reappears, she must choose between her current existence and the life she left behind.

Simon Stone, known for his radical interpretations of classic works such as Yerma and Phaedra, makes his debut at The Bridge Theatre. Speaking about the production, Stone said:

“I’m over the moon to have found a new London home in the beautiful Bridge Theatre. The space is exhilarating, versatile, incredibly intimate.”

He also praised his lead actors:

“Alicia was born to play this role. She grew up watching Ibsen in his original language. His myths course through her veins. She’s totally mesmerising to watch inhabit a character. The truth emanates from her. At a young age she’s already built an impressive career of emotionally and physically astonishing performances. Theatre audiences now have the chance to soak up that unique talent live.”

“I’ve been a fan of Andrew since I was a teenager. His effortless emotional access; the ugly truth underneath his handsome, charming exterior; the vulnerability that he’s willing to let us watch, thereby transforming itself into awe-inspiring strength. Open, raw, honest: my kind of actor.”

The creative team includes set designer Lizzie Clachan, costume designer Mel Page, composition and sound designer Stefan Gregory, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, casting director Jessica Ronane CDG, and assistant designer Pip Terry.

The Lady from the Sea is produced by London Theatre Company in collaboration with Wouter van Ransbeek.
