Interview: Bourgeois & Maurice on Pleasure Seekers at Soho Theatre

“we’ve been able to go wild on the production- lights festooning the auditorium, UV, disco balls, huge silver curtains, and an 8ft pinata that blows smoke out its arse. So very much a serious piece of theatre”

Bourgeois Maurice

Bourgeois Maurice

Cult cabaret superstars Bourgeois & Maurice are back with a spectacular brand-new show  that puts the FUN back into our fundamentally pointless existence.

Pleasure Seekers bellyflops straight into a joy jacuzzi as B&M party their way to ultimate happiness with the hilariously savage wit and unique brand of pop-satire that has made them one of the UK’s most subversive and original musical acts. Life-affirmingly demented, this brand-new show is a high-energy homage to hedonism in all its filthy, fabulous glory. Featuring original music.

Soho Theatre will host a 21-night run of their brand-new show Pleasure Seekers. Tickets are available now from www.sohotheatre.com.

You’re back at Soho Theatre with new show Pleasure Seekers, what can you tell us about it?

It’s Bourgeois & Maurice on a mission to bring pleasure to every corner of the globe. We begin with a very loud, very bright celebration of the things that bring us pleasure, which quickly spirals into a very weird, very dark wormhole trying to figure out what ‘pleasure’ even means. But we keep it fun through the medium of song, dance, and multiple costume changes.

What inspired you to create Pleasure Seekers?

The show is absolutely inspired by the experiences of the last two years, without really being about it. We don’t mention the C word but we’re definitely reacting to the experience of being in and out of lockdowns for 2 years. We wanted to make a show that was about people coming together, experiencing something live and in the moment, and trying to look forward whilst also being a chance to have a collective moment of ‘WTF just happened?!’

How will the show help audiences find pleasure?

Well, at the start of the show we politely request that the audience don’t think at all during it, as we have found that thinking can impede one’s pleasure. If they stick to that guidance and just take the whole spectacle as a way to spend a crass and meaningless hour in Soho, then they should be fine. If they do decide to peel away at the show’s glittery surface and start revealing the deeper existential crisis beneath, then to be honest that’s their own fault.

Tell us about some of the challenges you’ve faced in bringing the show to life?

The usual stuff of money, time and trying to rig toy babies in a kabuki drop.

How does it feel to be back at Soho Theatre?

It feels great! And this time they’ve even let us have the main theatre space, which means we’ve been able to go wild on the production- lights festooning the auditorium, UV, disco balls, huge silver curtains, and an 8ft pinata that blows smoke out its arse. So very much a serious piece of theatre.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to see Pleasure Seekers

DO IT! It’s a super silly but thoughtful explosion of ideas and songs made by 2 childish grown ups who should know better. Plus you’ll be back in time to watch Interior Design Masters on catch up before bed, like we do.
