Jason Donovan leads the newly announced casting for this first UK non‑replica staging of the hit Disney musical, joining Tobias Turley, Leonor Correia, Caitlin Tipping and Luke Bayer as Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay and Ryan.

The production marks the 20th anniversary of the original Disney Channel film. It will run at the Lyric Theatre at Lowry until 19 September 2026.

Audiences can expect an immersive experience, with the theatre transformed into a full basketball court complete with on‑stage seating.

The show will feature classic songs including Breaking Free, We’re All In This Together, Get’cha Head in the Game and Stick to the Status Quo.

High School Musical has a book by David Simpatico, with music adapted, arranged and produced by Bryan Louiselle. It will be co‑directed by Hope Mill Theatre founders Joseph Houston and William Whelton.

High School Musical Extends Salford Run Due to Phenomenal Demand

On joining the musical, Jason Donovan said “High school musical was such a massive part of my kids early childhood. As a parent and as a musical fan the film was family entertainment at its best. Magical! Loved it. Popular culture has a cycle and I’m delighted to be joining this new reimagined High School Musical theatrical experience 20 years on from when I first discovered the film. Looking forward to seeing all in Salford.”

The creative team includes choreographer Aaron Renfree, set designer Andrew Exeter, sound designer Matt Peploe, video designer George Reeve, lighting designer Rory Beaton and costume designer Sophia Pardon.

Musical supervision comes from Katy Richardson with musical direction by Audra Cramer. Casting is by Pearson Casting, with production management by Ammonite Studios and general management by Chris Harper Productions.

The musical is produced by Hope Mill Theatre, Chris Harper Productions and Lowry.
