Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is set to be filmed live at His Majesty’s Theatre in London for the first time, with the production scheduled for an international cinema release in 2027.
Universal Pictures Content Group, LW Entertainment and Cameron Mackintosh have announced that the iconic musical will be captured in front of a live audience at its original West End home as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations.
The live capture will record the special anniversary Gala performance on 9 October 2026, marking four decades since the production first opened at His Majesty’s Theatre. The event will also feature celebrated alumni from across the show’s history joining the current company on stage for a special curtain call.
The film is a co-production between Universal Pictures Content Group, Cameron Mackintosh Limited and LW Entertainment. It will be directed for the screen by Brett Sullivan (Hadestown) and produced by Dione Orrom (Six: The Musical Live!), with Helen Parker serving as executive producer.
The anniversary cast appearing in the filmed performance will be led by Jordan Donica as The Phantom, Beatrice Penny-Touré as Christine Daaé and Rhys Whitfield as Raoul. They will be joined by Sierra Boggess, Matt Bateman, Joseph Millson, Ian Pirie, Joanna Riding and Millie Lyon.
The filming forms part of a major anniversary season for The Phantom of the Opera, with the international company performing at His Majesty’s Theatre until 21 November 2026. Tickets for the stage production are currently on sale through to 2 October 2027.
To coincide with the anniversary, Andrew Lloyd Webber has also remixed the original 1986 London cast recording after rediscovering the analogue master tapes. The Phantom of the Opera (The Andrew Lloyd Webber 2026 Mix) will be released digitally on 9 October, with CD and vinyl editions following on 6 November.
Since its premiere in 1986, The Phantom of the Opera has become one of the most successful musicals in history, playing to more than 160 million people across 229 cities, 54 territories and 23 languages.
Featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, the musical tells the story of Christine Daaé, a young singer who becomes the obsession of the mysterious Phantom beneath the Paris Opera House.
