After years of pretending to be other people, self-censoring and changing her name for fear of anyone finding out who her brother is, Nicola Wren (Replay, 501 Things I Do In My Bedroom) realised that to find her place in the world, she would need to stop hiding who she is. Superstar is Nicola’s extremely funny, autobiographical rite of passage story about family, identity and authenticity while concealing that you’re Coldplay’s Chris Martin’s little sister.
The youngest of five children in a family of big characters, Nicola knew from a young age she would need to form a strong identity – so she set out to become a superstar. With her siblings growing up, starting families of their own and one brother becoming an actual international superstar, Nicola soon found that she didn’t only need to prove herself to her siblings, she needed to prove herself to the world as well.
A wonderfully honest play, Superstar explores what happens when you stop performing for everyone and simply let them see you. It is a powerful statement about reclaiming your identity, standing independently of your family’s expectations and learning to accept that being yourself is enough.
Nicola Wren comments, I have always been fascinated by the ways in which family dynamics have an impact on the choices we make as adults, and the careers and relationships that we pick. In a world obsessed with fame and success, I wanted to use my personal, warts-and-all story of growing up with four older siblings, and one mega-famous brother, to question why we make the choices we make? Who are we doing it all for? And what are we trying to prove?
