Interview Gein's Family Giftshop

Interview Gein's Family Giftshop

Multi-Award winning Gein’s Family Giftshop make their highly-anticipated return to Soho Theatre following a critically acclaimed Edinburgh Festival Fringe season and their second successful UK tour.

We caught up with the group to find out more about Gein’s Family Giftshop: Volume 3.

Geins Family Giftshop: Volume 3 is coming to Soho Theatre, what can you tell us about it?

Well, it’s easily our best show and we’re really proud of it. It’s also a cracking little insight to the internal workings of a group of people who have to rewrite a show five weeks before they fulfill their contractual obligation to attend the world’s largest arts festival. But if you need a sound bite; It’s super funny and a right flippin’ laugh.

How would you describe your comedy style?

People think we’re dark, fast paced and smarter than we let on. But, we reckon brilliant covers all that. See also “absolutely incredible” and “I don’t get it, but it looks like you’re doing well”. While you’re seeing things; you should see our show, and “Oldboy” it’s a great film.

How did the group get together?

Three of us went to uni together, all the best folk meet in a former polytechnic after a shocking set of A-level results. Adam is new to the group and we let him in because He used to go to drama club with Kiri. Basically, unless you’ve been in some sort of formal education setting with one of us, you won’t get in. So, stop asking (Matthew Kelly).

You’ve won quite a few awards, how does that feel?

It’s actually sort of unbelievable? We just want to make people laugh, but to make people laugh so much that they create tiny monuments out of metal, or perspex, or paper to celebrate how much we made them laugh is whatever the opposite of humbling is.

How did Edinburgh Fringe help prepare you for taking the shows out on tour and then to London?

The fringe is great to get a show polished. The show can’t help but improve when you’re doing it 26 times in a row. Also, the fringe is good preparation for eating inappropriate meals at a strange hour- a skill we further develop on tour. It’s not that unusual to see us shovelling down a roast dinner at 4am. Vegan though, we’re not monsters.

What if we haven’t seen Volumes 1 & 2, can we still come along?

No*, unless you pay us what you would have done to attend the previous two shows. Let’s call it a “late to the party” tax.

*YES!

Gein’s Family Giftshop is at Soho Theatre Monday, 5th to Saturday, 10th  February 2018.
