Interview: Tom Oliver on Shucked at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre

The much-anticipated UK premiere of Shucked is set to bring laughter and heart to Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre this spring. With a book by Robert Horn and music and lyrics by Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, this Tony Award-winning musical comedy has already delighted audiences on Broadway and across the US.

Tom Oliver joins an all-star cast under the direction of Jack O’Brien, promising a vibrant and unforgettable theatrical experience. The story follows Maizy and Beau as their small community faces a crisis when their beloved corn crop begins to fail, leading to a journey filled with humor, hope, and catchy songs.

Shucked runs at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre from 10 May to 14 June 2025, with press night on 20 May.

       

You’re appearing in Shucked at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre — what can you tell us about the show?

The show is a fun loving, heartwarming, joyous, belly laughing experience. It’s set within a community of people, who have an undying love for corn and each other. It’s the perfect blend of friendship, love and COMEDY.

What excites you most about being part of the UK premiere of this Tony Award-winning musical comedy? 

It’s the first time a British audience will be seeing this truly amazing show. I feel extremely grateful to be a part of that. The fact we are performing this outside at Regents Park Open Air Theatre brings this show to life. I also can’t stop laughing at the script so I’m always engaged.

How would you describe the atmosphere and energy that audiences can expect from Shucked at Regent’s Park?

Expect the unexpected. Come with an open mind an open heart, a box of tissues for the tears and laughter. The cast are incredible so you will have no choice but feel the energy.

The musical features a unique blend of humour and heart — what do you think makes its story resonate with audiences?

We all love a rom com, this takes it to the next step. It’s also a show which welcomes all communities, all people ❤️

What has it been like working with director Jack O’Brien and the creative team to bring this production to life?

It has been an incredible experience working with Jack, he is a fountain of knowledge and is really helping everyone to get the best out of this show. Robert Horn and Sarah O’Gleby have been brilliant to work with, it’s been a collaborative experience with the creative team, it has been such a fun and joyous time.

What would you say to anyone thinking of booking to see Shucked?

Book it as soon as possible. If you want to be in your feels with nonstop laughter, this is for you. This show is just going to be the best part of your summer.
