Pitlochry Festival Theatre has revealed the full programme for its 75th anniversary celebration weekend, taking place on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May 2026.
The weekend will feature a mix of free and ticketed events, offering behind-the-scenes access, community collaboration, conversations with leading figures and a commemorative exhibition.
All funds raised across the weekend will support the Theatre’s 75th Anniversary Appeal.
The programme reflects the Theatre’s origins, inspired by founder John Stewart’s wartime promise to create a festival theatre in Pitlochry, and looks ahead to its future as a national cultural institution.
On Saturday 9 May, audiences can take part in Backstage Tours at 11am, 2pm and 3.30pm, with one accessible tour available.
Led by Head of Production Dan Franklin, the tours will explore the Theatre’s workshops and reveal how productions are built entirely from scratch.
The same day will also feature Community Stages: 75 Year Dream, inviting 75 people from local communities to take part in a one-day creative performance inspired by the Theatre’s origin story.
Participants of all ages will work with professional theatre-makers to create original material, culminating in an evening sharing directed by Associate Director Ben Occhipinti.
On Sunday 10 May at 7.30pm, author and Honorary President Colin Liddell will lead an in conversation event titled Colin Liddell: Celebrating 75 Years of Scotland’s Theatre in the Hills.
He will be joined by journalist Magnus Linklater and Artistic Director Alan Cumming to discuss the Theatre’s history and its next chapter, marking the launch of Liddell’s new book Scotland’s Theatre in the Hills.
Across the weekend, audiences can also visit the free SEWN Exhibition in the River Room, showcasing highlights from the Theatre’s costume history as part of SEWN: 75 Years of Iconic Costumes.
Further anniversary plans include 50s Picnics in the Park, a series of community picnics scheduled for August 2026.
The 75th anniversary year will culminate in Alan Cumming’s first season as Artistic Director, alongside a fundraising appeal aiming to raise £500,000 and expand the Theatre’s supporter base by the end of 2026.
