Sleep No More will close in Shanghai on 30 August 2026 after a decade-long run that has redefined immersive theatre in China.

The production, a co-production between SMG Live and Punchdrunk, opened in 2016 and quickly became one of the city’s most sought-after cultural experiences.

Over ten years, Sleep No More has been performed 2,670 times to more than 700,000 visitors, generating over 10 billion RMB and earning its place as the most successful theatrical production in Shanghai’s history.

The production is widely credited with sparking the rapid growth of China’s immersive entertainment industry, influencing a surge of similar experiences across the country.

While the Shanghai chapter comes to an end, a new version of Sleep No More is set to open in Shenzhen in 2027.

The production will be created by the original creative and production team and will be staged at Shenzhen Bay MIXC.

This new iteration will incorporate local cultural influences to create a unique immersive experience, and will become the only version of Sleep No More in China from 2027 onward.

The Shenzhen production will be presented through a partnership between SMG Live, Punchdrunk, Shenzhen Runwen Culture Development Co., Ltd and Shenzhen Media Group – Good Media Co., Ltd.

The move marks a continued push to expand immersive theatre across China, building on the success and legacy established in Shanghai.
